12-Lamp UVL-Aqua System for Wastewater Disinfection

In late 2024, a utility engineering company specializing in gas supply and infrastructure approached us with a clear request: deliver a high-capacity ultraviolet disinfection system for wastewater treatment at a new facility. The challenge? The equipment had to be installed in a confined underground fiberglass vault while maintaining precise performance specifications.

Project Requirements & Technical Background

The client requested a vertical, U-shaped UV system with a minimum capacity of 75 liters per second, equipped with a weather-resistant control cabinet and an automatic cleaning module. The UV dose had to consistently reach 40 mJ/cm² — a level typically required for discharge into sensitive aquatic environments.

While the client already had a competing offer boasting a 275 m³/h system at 7.5 kW and the same 40 mJ/cm² dose, our engineers conducted a technical review and uncovered a flaw: achieving that UV dose with a DN 300 pipeline under those parameters was highly unlikely. In practice, the dose would likely fall short — closer to 30 mJ/cm².

Our Solution: UVL-Aqua 12-700

We proposed a solution based on the UVL-Aqua 12-700 — a high-efficiency UV disinfection unit optimized for wastewater treatment. This system features:

  • 12 long-life amalgam lamps, offering high-dose uniformity with low energy consumption.
  • A corrosion-resistant housing made from AISI 304 stainless steel.
  • A vertical, U-shaped chamber design, ideal for narrow, buried installations.
  • A fully integrated control cabinet with active cooling and IP65 protection.
  • An automated cleaning unit for continuous operation without manual maintenance.

UVL-Aqua 12-700 Technical Specifications:

  • Flow rate up to 800 m³/h @ 25 mJ/cm²
  • Flow rate 340 m³/h @ 30 mJ/cm²
  • UV dose: 30 mJ/cm²
  • Number of UV lamps: 12
  • Lamp type: Amalgam UVL-32700, rated for 16,000 hours
  • Material: AISI 304 stainless steel
  • Design: Vertical U-shape
  • Additional equipment: IP65 cabinet with electronic ballasts (EPRA), cooling system, automatic cleaning unit

Flexible Approach, Reliable Execution

Despite strong competition, our offer stood out due to accurate UV dose calculation, transparency in technical specs, and flexible terms. We also offered a favorable payment split (50% upfront, 50% by the agreed delivery date).

Among the challenges faced:

  • Tight production deadlines
  • Custom control cabinet adapted for outdoor installation
  • Delayed component shipments
  • Staff shortages due to health-related absences

Despite these, the client was consistently kept up to date, and all documentation — including contracts, drawings, and installation manuals — was delivered on time and in full.

The control cabinet included an automatic ventilation trigger that activates cooling when the electronic power supplies (EPRA) are operating, ensuring long-term reliability.

Delivered Configuration Included:

  • 1 × UVL-Aqua 12-700 disinfection unit
  • 1 × Outdoor-rated control cabinet with dual cooling fans
  • 1 × Automatic cleaning module
  • Full set of drawings, passport, and installation instructions
  • Foundation mounting recommendations (steel profile base)

By February, the system was fully assembled and ready for shipment. The client appreciated the balance of engineering accuracy, transparent communication, and adaptive project support from the initial consultation to final delivery coordination.

Outcome

The project was successfully completed with a fully customized, high-efficiency UV water sterilizer. Our amalgam lamp-based disinfection system delivered the required performance under real-world conditions — with safety, efficiency, and compliance at its core.
