Submersible Modules for a Fish Farm: How a Sturgeon Facility Chose a Reliable UV Water Disinfection System

Aquaculture operations, especially those using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), require dependable and safe water disinfection. Earlier this year, a sturgeon farming team approached us with a clear goal — to upgrade their current UV setup with a more durable and high-performance solution. Based on partner recommendations and confidence in UVL product quality, they selected our submersible UV disinfection modules.

Challenge: Consistent UV Disinfection Despite Water Level Fluctuations

The primary complication at this site was the unstable water level in open tanks, which frequently dropped by 10–15 cm due to process cycles. This created a risk that part of the UV lamp might be exposed to air, leading to overheating and shortening the lifespan of the amalgam lamps.

Although extending the quartz sleeves was considered, the client opted for a smarter and more adaptable setup — a float-based mounting system. The UV disinfection lamp was attached to a sturdy rod with a buoy that kept the module at a consistent submersion depth.

Additional weights positioned on the lower part of the unit ensured vertical alignment, keeping the UV disinfection lamp in place regardless of water movement or level changes. This configuration addressed two key issues:

  • It guaranteed the active zone of the UV lamp remained submerged at all times, ensuring uninterrupted disinfection;
  • It prevented overheating, thereby extending the operational life of the germicidal UV lamps.

This effective, low-maintenance solution allowed for site-specific adaptation without any complex retrofitting or costly engineering work.

What We Supplied

To meet the client’s needs, we delivered three UVL Mod 19210 submersible UV modules, each equipped with a 210W amalgam lamp, delivering a total output of 630W. The system included:

  • UV-C germicidal lamps (254 nm) with no ozone generation
  • Protective quartz sleeves
  • Waterproof cable assemblies
  • Electronic ballasts (EPRA)
  • 10-meter sealed power cables
  • Packaging and delivery to the shipping terminal

Long-Term Support and Warranty

The customer received a detailed commercial offer, including a 10% custom discount. All components came with an extended warranty — the UV lamps are rated for up to 12,000 hours of service. In the unlikely event of failure, a simple photo or video is enough to activate free replacement.

Result: Operational and Ready for Scaling

The system has been successfully installed and is now fully operational. The farm’s management has already begun discussing scaling the setup to other water circuits. UV disinfection by UVL proved to be a reliable and efficient solution for intensive aquaculture environments.
