UVL specializes in designing and delivering ultraviolet disinfection systems for air and water treatment, tailored for food production, medical facilities, agriculture, and industrial environments. Each project is adapted to match the technical layout and regulatory requirements of the site, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
Project Background
A dairy processing facility reached out to us seeking a solution to improve indoor air hygiene. The site included multiple interconnected production zones, all ventilated by a centralized HVAC system. Air is drawn from outdoors, passes through filters and heat exchangers, and is distributed throughout the building.
Because the production line operates continuously, even minor interruptions result in financial losses. Any technical upgrades had to be completed quickly and without interrupting operations. The incoming air had to meet a sanitary quality rating of at least 99% under SA classification, and all solutions had to function safely in areas where personnel were always present.
Initial Problems
Previously, the facility relied on ozone generators and recirculating UV devices. However, these systems had notable drawbacks:
- Ozone levels regularly exceeded safety thresholds, triggering shutdowns;
- Frequent maintenance was required;
- Disinfection was inconsistent and failed to meet hygiene standards;
- Staff reported discomfort due to residual ozone.
A system audit revealed that contamination primarily originated from the incoming air stream. The decision was made to focus on UV disinfection of supply air, without redesigning the HVAC system or replacing existing ducts, which were embedded in limited-access zones.
Technical Requirements
- Application: air treatment in dairy production rooms
- Cleanliness target: 99% SA compliance
- UV dose requirement: 256 J/m³
- Airflow velocity: up to 6.5 m/s
- Duct section: rectangular 1000×700 mm and round Ø800 mm
- Available straight duct length: approx. 2 meters
- Air intake passes through filtration and heat exchange
UVL’s Engineering Approach
Given the spatial constraints and the need for a non-invasive solution, we proposed a modular UV lamp kit designed for direct integration into existing ductwork. Instead of a bulky preassembled section, compact amalgam UV lamps were offered, along with all the components needed for quick installation.
Delivered Components
- UVL ANC 500/144-P2-2-28 FLOW germicidal UV lamps (160 W UV output, 383 mm length)
- Electronic ballasts (EPRA L-220-1x500-2222-18, current: 3.2 A)
- Ceramic connectors (4P SE) with 10 m cables
- Mounting clips for in-duct installation
- Local control panel with status indicators and runtime tracking
An RS-485 integration option was initially considered, but the manufacturer had discontinued the compatible control cabinets. A standalone control unit was chosen instead, with simplified status monitoring.
To ensure operational continuity, the client also ordered extra UV lamps for on-site replacement.
Rapid Implementation
UVL provided two proposals: one for a full UV air disinfection section, and one for the modular kit. The client chose the kit due to its compatibility with internal protocols, ease of implementation, and the fact that it didn't require stopping production.
The order was processed and delivered quickly to the facility’s terminal. Installation was handled in-house by the client’s own team, without outside contractors. No ventilation downtime or structural changes were necessary.
Once installed, the system reached the required UV dose of 256 J/m³. Air quality met regulatory standards, and staff noted the absence of ozone odors and an improvement in indoor air comfort.
UVL’s Closing Note
We thank the dairy team for their cooperation. This project demonstrates how UV airdisinfection can be implemented in operating production lines—without dismantling equipment or disrupting workflows. Our commitment is not only to provide microbial safety, but also to adapt solutions precisely to each facility’s reality.
